TITLE: Foundations of ECLS: Skills, Training and Hands-on Management

OVERVIEW: The University of Kentucky Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS) course is a two-day course designed for healthcare professionals interested in learning cannulation techniques and providing care for adult ECLS patients. It has been designed to follow ELSO Guidelines for Training and Continuing Education for Adult ECLS Specialists.
Day 1 of the course offers didactic learning on various ECLS topics, including physiology of ECLS, cannulation strategies, patient selection, and patient management. Day 1 will also feature hands-on workshops focused on either cannulation and initiation or nursing care.
Day 2 (Day 1 is required to attend) is elective-didactic and simulation-based learning. Attendees will choose one of four elective topics focused on ECLS Transport, Nursing Care, Program Development, and Program Management for Physicians. Participants will then rotate through four stations of simulation-based learning: 1) ECLS Basics; 2) Emergency Management; 3) Daily Management; 4) Complication Prevention.
